Vivarium as a locus amoenus: Cassiodorus and his conception of Paradise
In this lecture, Prof. Palazzo will share new research from his forthcoming book Le Paradis sur terre. Cassiodore et les fondations du monachisme de l’Occident médiéval (Cerf). He will be focusing on the image above in Bamberg, Staatsbibliothek, Ms. Patr. 61, an eighth-century copy of Cassiodorus’ Institutiones.

Friday, November 13, 2026, 2-3:30 pm – MANUSCRIPT WORKSHOP with Prof. Eric Palazzo (Horton Room, Weston Library): A Sacramentary from Reichenau at Oxford
Prof. Eric Palazzo will lead us in a deep-dive of Oxford’s eleventh-century sacramentary from Reichenau (MS Canon. Liturg. 19). Attendees are encouraged to read Palazzo, “The Sacramentary” in A History of Liturgical Books from the Beginning to the Thirteenth Century (1998) prior to the workshop.
